SEGMENT: HOLLYWOOD PLAYBOY CLUB 1960'S, PRINCE EDUARD VON ANHALT, JANET LEIGH, JAMIE LEE CURTIS, MERCEDES BENZ

I had a friend named Bud who owned a company called Central Bureau Of Investigations, a Gum Shoe company. Bud was hired to look into a company that was Located in the Playboy Club on the 9th floor. A high profile person rented the office on the 9th floor and someone he hired as a manager was using the office not appropriately with young models and was asked to leave.

Bud asked me and my associates if we wanted to move our office to the 9th floor of the Playboy Club for our Laser Company and assist the renter if we were asked to. So we agreed and moved our Laser to the 9th floor. The renter arrived the next day and introduced himself.

He was Prince Eduard Von Anhalt of Bavaria. Had Germany been like it was in the past Eduard would be the ruler.

Prince Eduard had inherited several hundred million dollars when his brother was killed in an auto racing event prior to meeting him. He was very formatable and interested in our Laser project. He decided to lease a house near the Playboy Club and did so up on the hill across and above. It had steel gates and many bedrooms and an enormous kitchen. The house was open to all his U.S. contacts in the area at any time a place to rest was needed.

Eduard's assistant had hired a gentleman by the name of Bob Smith. Bob was a TV Host in a local TV Station and had a show named "You And Your Big Ideas". Two of the eventual projects introduced at the time were the "Pull Top Beer Can Opener" and, Barbie, Mattel's new doll released. Bob decided to move in the "Prince's" home on the hill. It was convenient and close to everything and everybody. We had all kinds of visitors visit us at our office during the time we were there to check out the Laser. We had military Generals, and high profile visitors.

Eduard owned many international businesses in Germany and elsewhere. One of his companies he was heavily involved was Mercedes Benz. Eduard shipped his 1968 Green Mercedes convertible to the U.S. We all enjoyed running around in it.

Eduard had to return to Germany and wanted to sell his Mercedes. He said he would give it to me for $5,000 which was underpriced for about $10,000. I could not afford it but wanted to own it. At the time I was working on a project that would bring me in for about $8,000 so I thought I could make it happen.

I went to a neighbor across the street from where I lived who was a manager of a local bank. He said he would loan me the $5,000 but would have to pay it back within 30 days with $500 interest. I agreed.

SEGMENT: ALMOST 30 DAYS GOES BY WITH NOTHING HAPPENING

My supposed income of $8,000 did not happenas promised and now I had 30 days to pay back the $5,000 plus $500 interest to my neighbor's bank. My wife Sallie was furious; she kept telling me to sell the Mercedes.

I went to the Mercedes dealer near the Playboy Club office but they said it was a royalty car and they would need permission to purchase if from me. I eventually had permission from the Anhalt family and had to convert the headlights to U.S. standards along with the speedometer. It was a costly effort but had to be done in order to sell the car.

Then the big surprise! Mercedes decided not to buy it. So, I was totally screwed! I had less than a month to pay back the $5,500. I was too involved and had to get back to my work and scheduled to fly to New York for a couple of days. I kept counting the days, now there was about 10 days left that I was thinking about it waiting for my flight to New York.

I got on the plane and we had a stopover in Reno for an about an hour. We finally landed in Reno and were resting in front of the passenger's entry. At the time there was no walking into a terminal, you had to descend on a passenger type latter to the tarmac and walk in the building. Several passengers walked off the plane and down the steps to the tarmac.

I looked out my window over at a few passengers waiting to come aboard. There was a Nurse holding the hand of a young girl waiting for permission to board. The passenger sitting beside me had gotten off and there was a single seat beside me. The seats were opposite to the Stewardess serving center.

Finally the waiting passengers were requested to board. The Nurse and little girl were the first to board an walked to the first seat open and near the bathroom. The nurse asked if the girl could sit by me and would be very friendly. Finally the Nurse gave the girl a kiss on the cheek and left.

A stewardess walk behind my seat and whispered in my ear that was scheduled to watch the little girl but just flew in from Idaho as a passenger and something she drank made her dizzy and asked if I would keep an eye on the girl passenger sitting next to me. I said of course and the girl and I started to chat. I asked her what her name was and she said was not given permission to tell me. I was sort of setback but was not going to argue about it.

The young girls asked me if I had a Son her age, 13. I said yes, I have a Son named Keith her age. Then she told me she was sick for a few days and that's why she was with the Nurse that Came aboard. She said she was fine now. She asked me to take her temperature and handed me a box with a 'Rectal Thermometer" in it. I told her I would need to get a standard one to put under her Tongue. I asked the stewardess for one and she gave me one brand new in a Cellophane package. I took it out and took her temperature, it was normal. She was glad and started to chat with me.

She told me when we arrived at the airport in Los Angeles she would introduce me to her Mother and would get permission to telling me her name. She also asked me if I would join her and her Mother for hamburgers. I told her we would have to ask her Mother.

The flight had to circle around the LAX Airport for almost an hour because of low fog. We finally landed early evening and before the doors opened, the Stewardess that was hired to stay with the young girl came up to me again and asked if I could escort her down the gangway and hand her over to her Mother waiting in the baggage area. I agreed and understood the problem.

We got off the plane and walked down the passage going to the baggage area. When we reached close to the people waiting for the passengers the little girl pulled away from my hand and ran to her Mother waiting behind a covered chain. When I got close the little girl waved me over to meet her Mother.

I walked up to her Mother and got opened Eyes, it was Janet Leigh, the actress, who was originally married to Tony Curtis. Janet Said to her daughter, Jamie Curtis, thank Gene for watching over you and I think he should come over to have hamburgers in the future. She shook my hand and Jamie ran up to me and shook my hand also. She was so cute.

SEGMENT: IT WAS FRIDAY GETTING CLOSE TO LOAN PAYBACK

It was now Friday and it was getting close to 'Monday' and payback for money I did not have. Early in the afternoon Sallie answered the phone and said someone wanted to Speak with me. Sallie handed over the phone and I asked who was calling. The man on The other end said he needed to speak with me regarding the Mercedes. He offered me $5,500 for Edwards Mercedes Convertible and wanted me to drive it to his home in Beverly Hills to bring it to him to give to his wife for her Birthday. I asked how he knew exactly what I needed and he answered "That's my offer, take it or forget this call". I had no choice; I agreed to bring him Eduard's Mercedes. The next day Saturday, I stopped along the way and purchased some red ribbon and a large red bow as requested.

I drove to the address given me and parked in the driveway. I rang the bell and a servant answered the door and asked what I wanted. I told her I was called to buy the green Mercedes. She called the owner and told him I was waiting with the car.

He came out and shook my hand and handed me a check for the $5,500 and then gave me a $20 bill for the ribbons and bow. The man was robert Brandt. The servant and I wrapped the car with the red ribbon and then placed the red bow in the center of the car. The top was down.

He then went to the front door and called his wife to come out and see his birthday gift. She came out and looked at me with her eyes wide opened. She said "Mr. DeVito" "we have to stop meeting this way" jokingly. It was Janet Leigh again. She walked over to me and gave me a hug and thanked me again for watching over Jamie. Then, Jamie came out and ran up to me and asked me to stay for hamburgers! I said I had to go home to my Wife, she said she understood. She waved goodbye and Janet winked at me and blew me a kiss. I was so thrilled to have sold our car to Janet Leigh for her birthday!

My friend Bud drove over from the Playboy Club and picked me up and drove me home to Orange, CA. Sallie and I went out to celebrate.
