SEGMENT: POULTRY STORE AND MEL TORME SAN RAFAEL 1955

My Father decided to expand his poultry processing business in Petaluma and leased a store in downtown San Rafael on 4th street. We sold dressed chickens, chicken fryers for barbecuing, and eggs. We were the only store selling just those products in the entire area for cups and bowls. I had Trophy wives coming in to the store with a magazine recipe requiring different portions of chickens, like one and a quarter cup; half a cup, various cup portions, etc.

I loved serving these babes! I started advertising the feature and we had women from all over the San Raphael and San Francisco North Bay area visiting our store. We got so busy we had to hire a helper at times.

There was a Pawn shop across the street and the Son of the owner met me after work and visited a bar named George's next to the Pawn shop. One day we went to the bar and had a beer and sat in front of pianist at the piano arranging a song. Every time we went into the bar he was there still writing and playing on the piano. I'll never forget the lyrics:

"In Mountain Greenery
Where God Paints The Scenery
Just two crazy people together
While you love your lover
Let blue skies, be your coverlet"

I asked the piano player what his name was and he introduced himself to me and my friend and he responded, 'Mel Torme'. I will never forget that song and the man who made an arrangement to it.

Mel Torme
